In India and Pakistan the edible buds from the tree, called kachnar, are collected and used in many different recipes such as kachnar curry, or eaten as a stir-fry vegetable, or used to make achaar or pickles.
The flowers of the bauhinia or orchid tree have a fragrance that lasts throughout the night. It is a popular ornamental tree with masses of large, sweetly scented purple, pink, magenta, white or lavender blossoms that resemble orchids. This fast-growing tree provides welcome shade during hot summers and the blooms also attract a variety of hummingbirds.
