Native to Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina, the Erythrina crista-galli is known by many names such as the cockspur coral tree, Christ’s tears, cry-baby tree, and the fireman’s cap tree. It is a small tree with corky bark and elongated clusters of 20-40 spectacular coral red flowers on the tips of each branch. The flowers are an intense color and the largest uppermost petal of each flower bends upwards when the flowers are open.
Known as ceibo in Spanish, the Cockspur coral tree is the national tree of Argentina and its flower the national flower of Argentina and Uruguay. In Los Angeles, USA, it is the official tree of the city.
